Cechetti style ballet classes
About our Ballet Programme
Our ballet programme is built on the internationally recognised Cecchetti syllabus, known for its structured and methodical approach to developing strong technique, musicality, and discipline. This provides a clear pathway from beginner to advanced levels.
From their first steps in baby ballet through to higher levels, dancers are guided through a carefully structured progression, building posture, strength, and coordination, with the opportunity to take graded and major examinations. We accept children from toddlers aged 2.5 up to teenagers, and dancers who are 18 can join our adult ballet.
Ballet age groups & levels
Baby Ballet (ages 2.5 – 4) & Little Ballet (ages 4 – 5)
Play based introduction to ballet with themed classes and use of props like fairy wings and ribbons. A gentle yet structured 30 minute class that teaches children to regulate, listen to music, sequence and order activities, and wait their turn. The baby ballerinas are the dance stars of tomorrow and correct use of the body is emphasised even at this young age. Little Ballet is a longer class (45 mins) with more emphasis on skills and techniques, still with many elements of play and musical appreciation.
Pre-Primary (Ages 5–6) & Primary (Ages 6 – 7)
A gentle but structured syllabus is followed culminating in the Cecchetti Pre Primary examination. Aspects of fun and play are still very evident so as to keep the interest of the child, however basic technique is introduced to lay the correct foundation for future training.
Test I – Test V (Cecchetti Syllabus)
A structured and valuable syllabus during which children aim towards examinations within a class situation, with the teacher remaining in the room during the examination. Examiners bring value in their kind approach, with musical rhythms being taught and free dance incorporated into the exam requirements.
Grades I – V (Cecchetti Syllabus)
Grade examinations are entered in twos without the teacher being in the room. We spend approximately a year instilling muscle memory and syllabus knowledge, as well as artistic development into the children. The graded syllabus builds the body from year to year with a highly intelligent system of exercises.
Intermediate, Advanced I & Advanced II (Major Exams)
These are major examinations, forming part of the higher levels of Cecchetti training and developing advanced technique, strength, and artistry.

I began learning ballet at the age of four at The McDonald Academy of Dancing in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The beautiful studio environment instilled a deep love of dance, and I spent many happy years training in ballet (Cecchetti Method), modern, contemporary, tap, and even Highland dance.
After completing my major ballet exams, I pursued an academic career as a high school mathematics teacher, holding a BSc in Mathematics and Psychology. However, I was drawn back into the ballet world when my eldest daughter began classes, reigniting my passion for this beautiful art form.
I qualified as an Associate of the Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa in 2004 and went on to open The Dance Academy Zimbabwe in 2006.
I hold my Associate Diploma, Anatomy for Licentiate, and have been awarded the Licentiate Assessment twice. I am also accredited to teach Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT).
Over the years, I have guided many students through their examinations, trained three associates who are now studio owners, and produced numerous stage shows and recitals.
After relocating to South Africa, I opened The Dance Academy SA in 2022. We are building a dance space that strives for excellence while embracing the whole child, creating an environment that is both physically and emotionally safe.
I truly love my work and the families I get to connect with every day. Ballet remains a lifelong passion.
